Field Trip: Beer and art in Salem, Massachusetts

Every once in a while, Rick and I make a getaway from the farm. Sometimes to visit friends, sometimes to have an adventure, and sometimes, to take in a little culture. Last weekend it was all three.

After making the 2.5 hour drive, we met up with some friends at the Salem Beerworks. While the restaurant has a large scale, and somewhat sports-bar feel, the food was pretty good and the beer was excellent, so good we brought a growler of their Excellent Porter home. A week later it was still quite tasty!

However, the main reason for the trip was to see the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum. Rather than focusing solely on her art, the presentation included many artifacts from O’Keeffe’s life, including a significant number of pieces from her wardrobe, her jewelry, shoes, and many photographs of her through various stages in her adult life.

We were both engaged as we read about her all-encompassing approach to her art and personal imagery. O’Keeffe was very careful about how she presented to the world, from the clothes she wore, the expressions and poses she made, her surroundings, even the way she furnished her home.

Georgia O’Keeffe: art, image, style is at the Peabody Essex museum through April 1, 2018. We’re not exactly sure if or where this traveling exhibit will pop up next, but keep an eye on the major museums in your area. We highly recommend seeing it if you can.
